Free dailies around the globe saw their overall circulation grow just 2 percent, the lowest lift in the 13 years commuter papers have been around, Newspaper Innovation reported Monday.
In Europe, circulation was down 3 percent, to 26.4 million. In Asia, however, circulation was up 16 percent, and the Americas saw a 7 percent increase.
However, growth in the Americas would have doubled if the United States was not included, as the countries saw circulation drop 14 percent, Newspaper Innovation reported.
Globally, 49 editions and 20 titles were shuttered in 2008, the most of which came from Europe, with 37 editions and 11 titles, according to Newspaper Innovation.
