Newspapers in talks to outsource coverage

Newspapers in talks to outsource coverage

The Tribune Co. is in talks with the Washington Post Co. for foreign and national coverage for the Tribune's eight leading dailies across the United States. Should an agreement be made, Tribune would pay the Post for the coverage. Meanwhile, the New York Daily News has agreed to use GlobalPost for its foreign coverage, the Wall Street Journal reported Thursday.

Should the agreements go through, foreign news coverage at three of the biggest 10 newspapers in the United States would drastically change.

Tribune and the Post Co. have been in talks for more than a month. If Post is paid for foreign and national coverage, Tribune would likely close dozens of bureaux, according to the Wall Street Journal.

The deal would save Tribune millions of dollars a year. However, if no deal is reached, it is also possible the two would still collaborate on news coverage, but under a less stringent agreement, sources close to the talks told the Wall Street Journal.

The New York Daily News, meanwhile, has no foreign bureaux, and would pay GlobalPost, a Web start-up, for its coverage. Online advertising likely won't sustain the coverage, and the new company, which launched Monday, is hoping syndication will cover the remainder.
