In a bid to enable a transition to a nationwide digital television service, Taiwan's National Communications Commission promised to amend the obsolete cable Television Act, the Taipei Times reported Wednesday.
The commission is looking at possible factors like the price of the set-top box that might have prevented households from switching to DTV services. Against the target of 20 percent that were expected to have made the change, only 3.99 percent are using DTV. Amendments to the Cable Television Act will be presented to the Legislative Yuan and will be based on a report to be released next month.
Some suggestions have already been proposed by the NCC. These include providing one free set-top box per family, providing set-up boxes at reduced fees for those who rent them, and discontinuing rental fees once the costs of the set-up boxes have been recovered, according to the Taipei Times report, posted by AsiaMedia.
