Free daily circulation fell in Europe and North America '95-'05

Circulation of free dailies dropped from 1995 to 2005 in both Europe and North America, according to World Press Trends 2006, SFN's New Print Products reported.

In France, Greece, Italy, Portugal and Spain, the circulation totalled 20.3 million in 1995, but slid 6 percent to 19.3 million in 2005.

In Nordic countries, including Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden, free dailies had a circulation of more than 10.7.million in 1995, but dropped 11 percent to 9.5 million in 2005.

In Austria, Belgium, Germany, Ireland, Luxemburg, the Netherlands, Switzerland and the UK, the circulation of free dailies reached 57 million in 1995, but decreased to 49.3 million in 2005, down 14 percent.

In some Central European countries, including Czech Republic, Hungary and Poland, the circulation of free dailies had been down the most, from 9.4 million in 1995 to 7.6 million in 2005. The decrease was about 19 percent.

In North America, the circulation drop of free dailies is a bit slight, according to World Press Trends 2006. In Canada, it declined nine percent from 5.3 million in 1995 to 4.8 million in 2005, while in the U.S., it slid eight percent from 58.2 million to 53.3 million, according to the report, New Print Products, released by SFN and the World Association of Newspapers.
