UK publisher Guardian News & Media will relaunch a "faster, simplified" mobile Web site in March for all major handheld Web browsers, including the iPhone and Blackberry, Media Guardian announced Wednesday. The new mobile site aims to align its mobile services with the rest of the publisher's digital resources.
With the rise of smartphones such as the iPhone and Blackberry, GNM hopes the new site will better serve consumers, while also providing advertisers with more opportunity. The site will be funded by advertising and sponsorship including a partnership with mobile advertising specialists 4th Screen advertising and Google Ad Words in order to "meet the needs of advertisers keen to capitalise on this growing market," said GNM Commercial Director Adam Freeman.
The relaunch also looks to provide smartphone users with better and more up to date news. As the accessibility of online content continues to grow with the increased use of mobile browsers, Director of Digital Content Emily Bell stressed the site's ability to "put Guardian journalism in front of as many people as possible on as many platforms as possible," Media Guardian reported.
GNM has reached a distribution agreement with Vodafone UK and has begun negotiations with other networks.
