Yahoo has added The Boston Globe and St.Petersburg Times to its newspaper consortium, bringing the count of its media companies to 38, and the total number of newspapers to 793, TechCrunch reported Monday.
The consortium's success is due to helping increase traffic to newspaper Web sites; meanwhile, Google is ending its newspaper advertising partnerships. "Yahoo's newspaper strategy has seen success because, unlike Google, it never tried to get into the business of selling print ads," the TechCrunch article stated.
Yahoo helps drive traffic to newspapers by displaying article headlines across its properties. In the past year and a half, since the consortium launched, the links have sent 200 million views to partner newspaper sites, according to the TechCrunch article, posted by the Washington Post. Of the nearly 800 newspapers, 600 use HotJobs, and Yahoo works with 120 of them on managing their online ads.
