West Australian newspaper seeks 5% staff cut

West Australian newspaper seeks 5% staff cut

The West Australian newspaper has called for its staff to volunteer for redundancy as it seeks to shrink its pay roll by 5 percent, ABC News reported Tuesday.

The announcement was made following the close of trade on the Australian Stock Exchange Tuesday, Perth Now reported. According to sources at the newspaper, redundancies are likely to eliminate 60 to 70 jobs, 15 of which will come from the editorial department.

Previously, the newspaper asked staff to volunteer to work four-day weeks or a nine-day fortnight, the response to which was "cool." The company also threatened at the time more "draconian measures" would follow if not enough staff volunteered for the shortened hours, according to Perth Now.

Secretary of the Media, Entertainment and Arts Alliance, Michael Sinclair-Jones, said the redundancies could see up to 100 employees jobs threatened. He expressed concern that compulsory redundancies would be enforced if volunteers do not reach the 5 percent mark, according to ABC News.
