Microsoft's bing reports early success

With the addition of the Bing search engine Microsoft has managed to gain on search engine giant Google, according to data released by comScore, the San Jose Mercury News reported.

Microsoft saw its market share rise 2 percent to 11.1 percent during the period from June 2 to 6. Results for the company's average daily penetration, a calculation of the number of people the product reaches, increased by 1.7 percent, to 15.5 percent.

Microsoft launched Bing, an updated and upgraded version of the company's search product, on May 28, in conjunction with an extensive advertising promotion on television and the Internet that claims Bing cuts through excessive data to bring helpful information to the forefront, claiming "search overload is officially over."

The data "showed a substantial improvement in Microsoft's position in the search market in the days following Bing's introduction," Reston, Va.-based comScore said.

Google stated that it, "welcomes competition that helps deliver useful information to users," according to the Mercury News's SiliconValley.com.

Greg Sterling, principal at consulting and research firm Sterling Market Intelligence in San Francisco, said the new product is already offering a much improved service on Microsoft's past efforts.
