Unique visitors to U.S. newspaper Web sites for the month of June were down on year-to-year evaluations at a number of papers, according to data from Nielsen Online, Editor & Publisher reported.

Declines in Web site visitors were reported at NYTimes.com, The Boston Globe, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution and the New York Post.

However, not all sites were down in traffic, as the Los Angeles Times had a 66 percent increase in visitors from 2008, with 10.2 million uniques on the back of its coverage of Michael Jackson's death.

The decrease may partially be a result of Nielsen's expanded data panels for June. "For some sites," Nielsen stated, "trending of previously reported data with current results may show percentage differences attributable to these products enhancements and should only be compared directionally."

The new panels has allowed Nielsen to expand its coverage ten fold to 30,000 Web sites from 3,000.
