Newspaper readership remains strong in Singapore as Internet use swells

More than three-fourths of all Singaporeans still read a daily newspaper, with nearly half of the overall population reading an English-language publication each day, the People's Daily reported today.

The figures remain largely stable as compared to findings from the Nielsen Media Index survey conducted the previous year. "This shows that there remains a core group of newspaper readers who continue with their habits regardless of the economic climate," Rebecca Tan, executive director of the Nielsen Company's media group in Singapore was quoted as saying by Asia One News.

Meanwhile, Internet usage intensified, with three out of every five Singaporeans logging on daily, according to the Asia Media Journal. The uptick reflects a rise of 3 percentage points over last year.

The study, conducted from July last year to June this year, surveyed 4,687 adults aged 15 and older, according to the Business Times. The Straits Times led in popularity, although free newspapers also grew in appeal.
