Specialty publications forced shut by finances

In an especially indelicate layoff scenario, a pair of publications produced under one roof closed the doors forever last week, leaving only a note for workers to find when they showed up to the office on Monday, WXIA-TV in Atlanta reported today. Media Window, the umbrella company of Gay City News and Southern Voice, had apparently been facing insolvency for some time, but the inability to continue operations had not been communicated to the firm's employees.

Editor Laura Douglas-Brown confirmed the incident via Southern Voice's page on Facebook, saying: "I am personally grateful to all of the staff, and to all of you who have had the courage to share your stories. It has been the honor of my life to help you tell them." The remark prompted 62 messages of condolence within seven hours.
