The nonprofit news business model took a beating on Tuesday when Alan Mutter wrote in his blog that nonprofit news is not sustainable. But yesterday, John Thornton, venture capitalist and owner of nonprofit news site the Texas Tribune, took a stand in defense of the nonprofit model, indicting Mutter's arguments and using his own newspaper as evidence of potential success.
According to Thornton, non-profit news sites do not earn their money from an endowment, but rather integrate a number of different earning strategies into their business. He himself cites subscriptions to the Texas Weekly newsletter, membership to the site, and corporate support as ways the site aims to earn money.
