The popularity of 3-D, both in films, television and in print, has been growing, and The Philadelphia Inquirer is planning to get in on the trend. The newspaper will publish a special section in June with all 3-D photos and advertisements, and include 3-D glasses for viewing, The Associated Press reported yesterday.
The goal of the edition, scheduled for Sunday, June 13, is to "push" readers' experience with print newspapers, publisher Brian Tierney, whose last day on the job is today, said in a statement, according to the Wall Street Journal.
The trend to publish special editions in 3-D is a growing trend. Recently, the Sun announced its plans to publish a 3-D edition in June, European fashion magazine Grazia published a 3-D issue this spring and Belgian newspaper La Derniere Heure published a 3-D edition in June.
The 3-D issue comes out of the advertising creative service Media Lab, launched by the newspapers in 2006, according to Reuters Blogs.
Philadelphia Newspapers declared bankruptcy last February. Last month, a group of lenders bought the Inquirer and the Philadelphia Daily News, its sister publication, for US$135 million.
