News design expert Dr. Mario Garcia told news organisations this week that platforms will increasingly be users' choice platform in the coming years, and if they don't already have a tablet edition, they're already behind. But at the same time, respecting the print product and growing it is the best way to become strong on the tablet platform, he told paidContent. "Take [print] to the next stage in its evolution, and then the tablet will flourish."
In his opening of the Power of the Tablet conference, given by the Poynter Institute for Media Studies, Garcia said newsrooms should create tablet-specific positions, such as editor and creative planner, paidContent reported.
In fact, Garcia said newspapers they must have a tablet edition by the end of this year. However, he said that print and tablets compliment one another, because the tablet is more like print than anything else ever has, according to PoynterOnline.
"Here, we now have the ultimate digital platform that allows you to feel disconnected when you are connected," he told paidContent. "The only way you're going to give this platform its due is by having people who are totally dedicated to an edition for the tablet ... you simply don't take what you have in print or in online and put it here. This has specific needs, specific potential ... the tablet is more demanding than online. If online is seen as a depository of the information that is in print, the tablet is more of a toy ... I'm going to disconnect by connecting. That would require the mentality of editors who will be very dedicated to seeing how this happen."
