Sports dailies are the only Spanish newspapers that increased their readership in the second quarter of the year, according to the latest report from the Spanish Association for Mass Media Investigation, prnoticias.com reported.
Spain's advancement in South Africa's World Cup, the long-time rivalry between Real Madrid and Barcelona, and the Atletico Madrid winning the Europa League have contributed to awake the readers interest in the specialised press.
Marca remains the leader with an average of 2,875,000 readers, which represents an increase of 3.56 percent when compared to 2009, followed by rivals AS (1,362,000 readers), Sport (763,000 readers) and Mundo Deportivo (648,000 readers).
All four newspapers also have received good news on the Internet front, as their websites received more users than expected. For instance, visits to AS.com increased by 41.1 percent, while Marca has had 16.3 percent more visits than in 2009, AS reported. The other two newspapers, Sport and Mundo Deportivo, also had increases of 24.7 percent and 23.4 percent, respectively, Sports.es informed.
