Newspapers in Argentina will only be sold in newsstands

Argentinean President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner signed on Wednesday a decree that regulates the distribution of newspapers and magazines and recognises newsstands clerks as the only workers allow to sell them, El Clarin reported.

The new regulation stipulates the creation of a national registry of newsstands in order to combat unauthorised sale channels such as supermarkets and gas stations, Terra.com.ar explained.

Newspaper companies will not be able to deliver copies through the mail service, as workers are now entitled to receive compensation for the distribution of free dailies and subscription publications.

According to ABC.es, Argentinean newsstands charge the highest percentage per newspaper sold in the world. However, after Kirchner's announcement, the leader of Union of Newspaper and Magazines Sellers Omar Plaini said that the next step will be to increase it to 40 percent with the goal of reaching 50 percent.
