Launch of Live Matrix: Online live video guide

The launch of the "first comprehensive guide for all live and scheduled events" on the Internet was announced in a press release today. Live Matrix will be available for publishers, event organisers and individuals as a service that covers live audio and video webcasts, product launches, site launches as well as other Web-based announcements.

Live Matrix organises video content according to genre (i.e. entertainment, news or sports). CNet explained that each event has a box that measures how many users have saved it to their listings so that the event gets a popularity rating of sorts. Users may also schedule reminders or share the event across their social networks. The online TV-guide does not host any of the content, but offers links to outside sites. The outlet sells advertising space and embarks on sponsorship ventures with event providers, according to Venture Beat.
"The Live Web is quite different from TV. Live events on the Web are interactive. In order to participate in these events, you have to be there when they start. Some kinds of online events, such as sports, breaking news, and product launches, are highly perishable. Their content gets less relevant over time, an important pain point for publishers," said Live Matrix co-founder Nova Spivack, "If Google indexes Web pages, or space, Live Matrix indexes Web events, or time. We're the program guide for what's happening on the Live Web," said co-founder, Nova Spivack.

ComScore data shows that 1.4 billion minutes of live content was watched in the United States in July 2010, a 648 percent increase since the same time last year. Meanwhile average live-streams are 7 percent longer than regular ones.

"The need for a guide to scheduled online events is clear, and the timing is perfect given the level of broadband penetration and the millions of daily scheduled events now happening online. We believe that the Scheduled Web is the natural progression from the real-time Web and that Live Matrix is uniquely valuable to consumers, event providers, online publishers and advertisers alike," Sanjay Reddy, the service's co-founder and CEO, stated in a press release.
