Russian-language domain names in Cyrillic are officially available for registration, Argumenti i Fakti reported yesterday. The move was announced last year as part of an expansion procedure by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names, which was intended to include domain names in languages that do not use the Latin alphabet.
The registration process itself will commence at a later date, assigned by the Coordination Center for Top Level Domains .RU (CCTLD). The presumed date may be sometime in November, Argumenti i Fakti added. Regulations will be decided upon by the CCTLD on September 30, Marker.ru wrote today.
The CCTLD will be evaluating guidelines such as:
-Administrative issues, i.e. no more than three domain names per individual
-Economical factors, i.e. price tag per domain name
-Technical limitations, i.e. deciding how many domains can be registered per hour or allowing registration for one letter a day
(From Marker.ru)
September 16 marked the end of the 10 month-long priority registration, which went out to government organizations, commercial brands and media outlets, Marker.ru said. Around 18,000 domain names were registered.
Ru-Center, one of the companies offering the domain names for sale, expects tens of thousands demands, each one costing RUB 600 (US$19.3). Registration firm RO1 insists that each company offering the service must be limited to offering not less than 20,000 domains per hour. According to Marker.ru, such "smaller" registration firms will be able to register up to 27,000 domains per hour.
Users applying for registration will be automatically granted with their desired domain name. If, however, there is more than one user who wishes to have a given domain, a closed auction will be held, Vesti.kz informed.
