The Times loses extra 120,000 to paywall

UK daily The Times has lost an additional 120,000 online readers following the installment of a paywall, the latest comScore data shows, Media Tel reported Monday. According to Thinq, the News International-owned daily also saw a 1.67 drop in print readership, reaching 494,205 - the first time since April 1994 that the figure has been under 500,000.

The title had 1.459 million unique visitors in August, a 7.6 drop from 1.579 million in July, when the paywall was launched, according to WallBlog.co.uk. The total minutes users spent on the site dropped by 16 percent from six million in July to five million in August, Beehive reported. Further, total page views dropped by 22 percent, from nine million to seven million, month-to-month.

Although a decrease in uniques is generally common in August, the 7.6 percent decline was more than four times greater than that of the websites of its broadsheet competitors, according to Beehive. The Guardian saw 75,000 (1.6 percent) less uniques in August while The Telegraph 46,000 (1.1 percent). Meanwhile, The Independent had a 1.3 growth in uniques, which rose from 3.43 million in July to 3.47 million in August.

The Guardian, The Telegraph and The Independent all saw augmented total page views and total minutes that users spend on their sites. The paywall first brought about a 26.7 percent slash in uniques, amounting to 575,000. Compared to June's 2.154 million unique visitors, July showed 1.579 million. The July figures were nearly 35 percent less than the same time last year, according to Beehive. However, the unique visitors do not actually measure how many readers are accessing the content, only how many are on the front page.

A survey by research group TGI showed that only 4 percent of Web users were ready to pay for newspapers' digital content, Media Tel added. According to Beehive, in July The Times had about 15,000 paying subscribers and 12,500 iPad app subscribers. However, News International, the daily's publishers, has not released the latest figures yet.

The iPad app costs £9.99 for 30 days while the opening offer for the paywall was £1 for the same amount of time, the BBC explained. The Times had mentioned that it expected to lose 90 percent of its audience as a result of the paywall.
