A group of Wisconsin newspapers is offering US$250,000 worth of advertising for free, Editor & Publisher reported Monday. The programme, called "Thrive," is aimed at helping local business push through the economic downturn.

Michael Beck, general manager and executive editor of the Wausau (Wisconsin) Daily Herald, one of the participating papers, wrote, "Our position as the leading information provider puts us in a unique place -- and gives us the responsibility -- to help turn things around, and that's what we're trying to do."
Starting today and running until the middle of October, the Gannett owned newspapers will grant business purchasing an extra 25 percent advertising space twice as much for free.

The success of the programme will be documented and updated by the newspapers.
