Print classifieds at Fairfax Media's two major Australian newspapers were hit hard last month, as employment, auto and real estate advertisements spiralled, The Australian reported Saturday, January 10.

The Sydney Morning Herald and The Age, in Melbourne, saw a 38 percent drop in weekly classified pages, part of which was due to total weekly pages dropping by 2.8 percent. Meanwhile, the Sydney radio ad market also fell.
In Sydney, radio advertisements dropped 13.7 percent in the fourth quarter of 2008, and 11.4 percent just in December, The Australian reported, citing Commercial Radio Australia data.

Fairfax saw employment classified page volumes dropped 52 percent at the Herald, 48 percent at The Age and 54 percent at The Australian Financial Review. Auto ads fell 46 percent at the Herald and 62 percent at The Age, and real estate ads were down 35 percent at the Herald and 49 percent at The Age, month-on-month from November to December, according to The Australian.
