The Scottish government is considering backing a plan which would provide free newspapers for a year to 17-year-old Scots, Press Gazette reported.
The project is proposed by the distribution firm Menzies Group, which has appealed to Scotland's enterprise minister Jim Mather in hopes to secure free subscriptions for Scotland's teenagers.

Menzies proposal is similar to a plan put in place by French President Nicolas Sarkozy, who backed government funding of
newspaper subscriptions for 180year-old French citizens.
A spokesman for Mather said the minister is cognisant of the fact that Scotland's newspaper is "facing a number of challenges" and said the minister "has had a series of meetings with various stakeholders from the newspaper industry to discuss specific challenges that the industry is facing and forthcoming initiatives."
