The time spent by visitors on the top 30 newspaper Web sites experienced stagnation or decline during May, Editor & Publisher reported on Monday.

The study conducted by Nielsen Online data, measured the average time spent per person on the top 30 newspapers' Web sites as defined by unique users.

Seventeen of the top 30 Web sites registered declines in average time per visit, including the Wall Street Journal, LA Times, Chicago Tribune and the Boston Globe's Website, Boston.com.

However, some large increases were recorded. At The Star Tribune in Minneapolis whose average visit time jumped 20 minutes from this time last year to 47 minutes for May 2009. The San Francisco Chronicle and SFGate.com nearly doubled its year-to-year visit time, registering 21 minutes for May 2009, up from 12.

Average time spent per person declines can be attributed to a number of things, including news events and a rise in unique visitors can bring average times down.
