The revival of San Quentin prison's newspaper after twenty years of absence has been warmly received by inmates the Dispatch Online reported.

James McGrath Morris, author of Jailhouse Journalism pointed out the decreasing amount of journalism in prisons, calling San Quentin "a flower coming up in a barren garden."

Prison newspapers have shrunk to about 50 or 60 in total, compared to 30 years ago when almost every prison produced and printed their own paper.

San Quentin's paper, which is funded with money from the prison's education budget, consists of interviews with former and current inmates, local and national news, puzzles, poetry, and various columns and news analysis.
