Previously planned reductions in Detroit Free Press home delivery means the newspaper's workers are exempt from owner Gannett Co., Inc.'s request for union employees to take a week of unpaid leave, Crain's Detroit Business reported.
"Detroit's in the midst of this whole strategic plan, and we can't afford to be off," said David Hunke, CEO of the Detroit Newspaper Partnership Inc., in which Gannett is a 95 percent stakeholder.

Gannett, based in McLean, Virginia, has 85 daily newspapers and 31,000 employees in the United States. About 12 percent of that workforce is unionised, Crain's reported.
There is no exact total of the number of Free Press employees in unions, but almost all reporters are members of the Newspaper Guild Local 34022, and four other local unions represent drivers, those working on presses and support staff, according to Crain's.
Gannett has stated exceptions will be given only to "newly hired employees and for other individuals and units who are impacted by other expense reduction measures," Crain's reported.
