Guild close to reaching deal with Globe

The Boston Newspaper Guild's president said that the union was close to reaching a deal with The Boston Globe, according to a Boston.com article on Monday. A ratification vote is set for July 20.

''The Boston Newspaper Guild continues to have productive discussions with the New York Times Company and Globe management,'' the Guild's president, Daniel Totten, said in a statement. ''We feel we are close to reaching an agreement that we can bring to Guild members for a vote.''

Globe spokesman Robert Powers said, ''The talks have been constructive and are continuing.''

The Guild initially rejected a $10 million concession package that involved an 8.4 percent pay cut, offered two weeks ago. As a result the Times Co. enforced, a compulsory 23 percent for all Guild members, a move that had the union threaten legal action.

The new concessions are expected to reach the $10 million savings goal by making cuts to benefits other than salaries.

Totten yesterday told union members that the almost three months of negotiations had taken their toll but the representatives would continue to seek the best outcome for their members.

''That process is continuing as we work amicably with the company to arrive at an agreement,'' he said.

The Guild represents nearly 700 editorial, advertising, and business office workers.
