Courier-Journal cuts 44 jobs

The Louisville-based Courier-Journal has been forced to eliminate 44 jobs, amounting to 7 percent of its work force, as part of publisher Gannett Co., Inc.'s wide staff reduction across its local newspaper division, Forbes reported Thursday.
The newspaper's president and publisher, Arnold Garson, spoke on the decision on the papers Website, saying there "were no easy decisions left to be made," as the company grapples with the financial and advertising downturns.

This is the second set of redundancies at The Courier-Journal since the end of 2008, when the newspaper laid of 51 employees.
The most recent set of staff cuts is part of Gannett's plan to reduce its U.S. payroll by 1,400 jobs, announced at the end of last month.
