Microsoft's Internet browser Internet Explorer lost users to other
browsers during the second half of 2008, The Wall Street Journal
reported over the weekend.
Figures from research group Net Applications show that Explorer had a 74 percent market share in May, compared to a 69 percent share in December.
Figures from research group Net Applications show that Explorer had a 74 percent market share in May, compared to a 69 percent share in December.
The loss is mainly due to more people migrating to Apple's Mac
computers, which come with the Safari browser, as well as increased
usage of the Mozilla Foundation's open-source Firefox browser and
Google's September release of its Chrome browser, The Wall Street
Journal reported in an article posted by The Australian.
In December, Firefox had a 21 percent market share, up from 18 percent in May, while Safari rose from a 6 percent share in May to 8 percent in December. Chrome's share was up from 0.7 percent in October, to slightly over 1 percent in December, Net Applications data shows, The Wall Street Journal reported.
In June, Mozilla unveiled a new version of Firefox, and on the first day it was made available, the browser was downloaded more than 8 million times.
