Lithuania's newspaper tax rises

Lithuania's VAT tax on newspaper sales increased from 5 percent to 19 percent on Jan. 1, Newspaper Innovation reported Saturday.

To counteract the government's tax increase, newspaper cover prices were increased by more than the VAT increase. Lietuvos žinios, for example, increased its cover price by 50 percent.
Many papers are purchased by single copies in Lithuania, and the increases may hurt circulation and lead people to turn to free papers, which would help free paper 15min, Newspaper Innovation predicted.

The overall circulation of paid titles in Lithuania has dropped over the past 10 years. In 2007 the figure plunged to 500,000 copies, compared to 2.5 million copies a decade ago, Newspaper Innovation reported.
