Venezuelan newspapers lack funds to import paper

More than 50 Venezuelan newspapers are facing a possible halt in production due to lacking funds needed to import paper, The Canadian Press reported.
The National Union of Press Workers are accusing the government of failing to provide funds in dollars required to pay debts to newsprint importers, saying the delay is resulting in newspapers that are "on the brink of ceasing operations due to the lack of paper."

President Hugo Chavez already antagonised his country's media when his
government announced plans to revoke 240 radio licenses and cut back
the number of stations per radio network to just three.
Since 2003, the government as enforced currency controls that require importers to "apply to a government currency," which has caused government delays in changing dollars at the official rate, 2.15 bolivars to the dollar, according to the CP. Newspapers are currently using small reserves of paper.
