Newspaper publisher APN News & Media began outsourcing editorial production work Sunday, and will extend the plan to five daily and three weekly newspapers by the end of the year, APN deputy chief executive Rick Neville said.
An outside contractor will be in charge of news editing and layout operations at The New Zealand Herald, the country's biggest daily, and several regional dailies, he said.
According to an article by the Associated Press, Neville said he is confident readers will not notice the difference in the editing and design of the papers.
APN is the largest operator of regional newspapers, radio and outdoor advertising in Australasia, according to the company's Web site. The Independent News & Media PLC, owned by Irish businessman Tony O'Reilly, also half-owns APN. The company's Irish newspapers are also conforming to the same outsourcing strategy.
Neville said 20 full-time editors will work at the contractor Pagemasters New Zealand, a subsidiary of Australian Associated Press, which is 20 minutes away from editorial offices. A time frame of six weeks has been set up to transfer all the Herald's editing and make-up. After that, the company will move on to the Aucklander weekly, the Herald on Sunday and regional papers in October, he told the AP.
