Advertising and sponsorship accounted for just over 73 percent of annual turnover and gross revenues in the UK's regional and local newspaper publishing groups in 2006, the latest Newspaper Society survey has found.
That near three-fourths majority is followed by circulation sales at 15.4 percent and contract printing at 5.1 percent, the survey reported. Other revenue for the UK's approximately 85 regional and local newspaper publishing groups include photo sales, IT services, training, rent, canteen, waste sales, editorial syndication and telephone promotions.
The survey also found that of the nearly 50,000 people working in regional and local UK newspapers, 31.7 percent work in advertising, while 26.6 percent work in editorial. Sixteen percent of those people work in press and production, 9.2 percent in in-house distribution and 8.3 percent in clerical or administrative positions. The remaining percentages include newspaper sales and promotions (2.7 percent), IT (1.5 percent), senior management (1 percent) and other duties (1.5 percent).
Of the estimated 2,648,045 pounds of total industry costs in the UK in 2006, staff members accounted for 44 percent, or 1,155,865 pounds, of that total. Thirty-one percent of the total costs went to production materials, outwork, administration, retail shops, repairs and maintenance.
Overall operating profit in regional and local newspaper publishing groups in the UK last year is estimated at 848 million pounds, the report states.
