The new site will include major London news, the Evening Standard's columns and blogs from specialist journalists.

Readers can vote in a daily online poll on key subjects on the Web site, and will also be able to participate in Evening Standard campaigns.

"We are proud to have successfully campaigned through the paper on behalf of Londoners, and have received overwhelming support from readers," said Veronica Wadley, the Evening Standard's editor told the Guardian. "Now we will be able to raise the profile of our campaigns further through our new web pages and allow readers to join debates and give their views instantly on the Internet."

The paper also launched its Eros cashless card Monday, which readers can use to buy the Standard. The card will have a one-week trial in Waterloo before it rolls out across London.

In tandem with its news site launch, the paper has relaunched its trade Web site, esadvertising.co.uk.
