The two leading newspapers in the Netherlands, De Telegraaf and Algemeen Dagblad, both lost readers in the second quarter compared with the same period last year.
In the free daily newspapers category, Metro was still on top with the widest circulation, according to the figures released by the institute for media auditing, HOI.
Total circulation (including subscriptions, trial subscriptions and kiosk sales) of Dutch national newspapers decreased to 3.74 million in the second quarter. The circulation of De Telegraaf dropped from 649,739 in the second quarter of 2006 to 626,613. The corresponding figure for Algemeen Dagblad fell by 9 percent to 425,108. NRC Handelsblad also lost readers, while Trouw, Het Financieele Dagblad and De Volkskrant made gains, NIS News Bulletin reported.
De Telegraaf is published by Telegraaf Media Groep (TMG), while Algemeen Dagblad is published by AD Nieuwsmedia, a joint venture formed by PCM and Wegener.
Wegener's regional titles showed mixed results. The annual sales of De Gelderlander, Brabants Dagblad, Eindhovens Dagblad and Provinciale Zeeuwse Courant were up, while sales of BN/De Stem and De Stentor dropped.
Spits, the free newspaper published by TMG, gained its circulation by 6 percent, from 421,134 in the second quarter of 2006 to 446,766 in the same period this year. Metro was still the most popular free newspaper with a circulation of 526,563. De Pers and Dag achieved figures of 486,399 and 326,086 respectively.
