Metro warns of $18 million losses

Metro International expects third quarter losses to reach $18 million, double last year's deficit, and a blow that has it reviewing its operations around the world, Brand Republic reported Friday.

“We are launching actions based on our findings and conclusions and this work will intensify over the coming period,” said Dennis Malamatinas, chairman of the board at Metro, according to the report.

Newspaper/Yahoo alliance could be a mixed bag

The alliance between Yahoo Inc. and hundreds of newspaper Web sites has aided publishers in gaining advertising, but could end up costing them independence and flexibility, all while burdening them with the uncertainty of technology that hasn't proven itself yet, Reuters reported Thursday.

Some of the 19 publishers partnering with Yahoo say the program has helped bring in readers and increased advertising in its first phase (in which classified ads are linked between newspaper sites and Yahoo's HotJobs), but nearly a year after the alliance was formed, results are hard to come by.

Circulation up again for Financial Times

The Financial Times recorded a 2.1 percent year-on-year circulation growth once again in September, which makes it the only daily quality newspaper seeing a rise in sales, the Guardian reported.

Owned by Pearson, the business daily sold an average of 441,219 copies last month, a 3.4 percent rise from August, according to data released Friday by the Audit Bureau of Circulations.

Younger, richer males watch more online videos in U.S.

Those watching the most online videos in the United States tend to be younger males, who are also above the average income level, a recent study conducted by the Online Publishers Association found.

The study profiles an average U.S. online video viewer as 39 years-old with an annual income of $59,000, and has equal opportunities for both genders.

Niger journalist held without charges

Police in Niger are continuing to detain a journalist who ran the only newspaper in the region, which has been made unstable by a continuing rebellion against government, Voice of America news reported Friday.

No official charges have been filed against Manzo Diallo,who published Air Info. He has been transferred back to his hometown, Agadez, which is under military occupation and a government state of alert. This makes his case difficult to track, Leonard Vincent, of journalism watchdog group Reporters Sans Frontieres, told VOA.

Time running out for media grant programs

If you plan to apply for this year's Knight News Challenge grants or the MacArthur Foundation's Digital Media and Learning competition, time is running out. The deadline for both of the programmes is Monday, October 15.

Those applying for the Knight News Challenge can submit a public application, which can be viewed by all, and commented on by News Challenge site users. Applicants for the Digital Media and Learning competition can also upload applications to the site, and revisit the application as many times as they want until the application deadline. Applicants need to be sure to click the “Finish” button, though, because incomplete applications will not be reviewed, the competition's site warns.
