Poland's daily market sees two changes

Newsstands in Poland looked a little different and weighed a little more today, as the new daily title Polska launched, while broadsheet Rzeczpospolita switched to a new format.
Rzeczpospolita, the country's last broadsheet, reduced to Berliner size. Polska has chosen to begin circulation just as Poland prepares for its general election at the end of the week.
Andrew Kureth, editor-in-chief of the Warsaw Business Journal, told Polskie Radio that Rz is his favourite newspaper.
“(The smaller format) is good for those who travel, but I agree that the layout of Rz is perfect, and I wouldn't change it, because you never change a winning team,” he is quoted by Polskie Radio as saying. “Maybe it will be cheaper for them to print such a newspaper, maybe that’s the reason.”
Kureth also told Polskie Radio he thinks Polska will have difficulties in competing with already established newspaper brands in the very competitive market in Poland. However, he said, launching just before elections is a good idea, although little is known about the new paper.
“I heard them say that they’re going to be kind of middle of the road and they’re not going to have any political allegiance. They will mainly be based on the success of their regional publications, so one might infer that because they’re popular in the regions they might be a tad more conservative than the ones that are the popular bigger papers,” he said. “But here’s one thing about the Polska daily: they have said that they will circulate as many papers as Gazeta Wyborcza and I think that’s going to be a really tough thing to do, especially at first. I think they also said that they will circulate 1 million copies on Friday. That’s also going to be very difficult.”
