The Bristol Evening Post is the first in the UK regional press to broadcast city council meetings live via webcasts on its Web site.
Beginning Tuesday night, thisisbristol.co.uk began offering readers live coverage of the 6 p.m. Bristol City Council meetings, keeping the video posted on its Web site for those unable to watch as it happened live.
Cameras and monitors installed in the city council chamber and in one of the Council House's committee rooms are funded by money from the European Union, aimed to encourage citizens' interest in what their city council's 70 members are doing.
“We will continue to have the best coverage of the council and its affairs in the Evening Post, but we'll add to this coverage by being able to broadcast the most important meetings in full on our Web site,” Mike Norton, the paper's editor, told HoldtheFrontPage.co.uk.
In the coming months, council meetings, as well as the ruling cabinet and planning committee, will meet in front of cameras. Webcasts can also be viewed at bristol.gov.uk/webcasts.
In the future, the council will monitor the number of hits the site receives, and survey people to find out how popular the new webcasts are.
“(Citizens) will be able to see their local councillor in action and we'll also be able to guide them to sections of the meetings that may be particularly important to them,” Norton said.
