Sony BMG Music Entertainment has struck a licensing deal with Yahoo Inc., which will allow people to upload files with music or video content by Sony BMG's artists to Yahoo, according to the companies Tuesday.
Financial terms of the deal were not revealed. According to Yahoo, the agreement calls for Sony BMG to receive a cut of the ad revenue.
The deal also contains the distribution of music videos via Yahoo player applications and widgets that online users can place on other sites.
This is the first time Yahoo has reached an agreement with a major recording company over licensing content in user-created videos.
Sony BMG has reached a similar licensing deal with Google last year, which also covered Google subsidiary YouTube.
This deal reflects the popularity of online user-created videos, which often include copyrighted content.
Last month, major media and Internet companies issued a set of guidelines requiring Web portals which host user-generated videos to use filtering technology to block unauthorized content.
Yahoo said it is deploying video identification and filtering technology early next year, ABC News reported.
