With the launch of the weekly newspaper Wicklow News, for Ireland's Wicklow area, River Media's number of local newspapers is expanding to 13.
The Wicklow News is the group's third paper in Dublin's surrounding commuter counties, following the Meath Post and Kildare Post, The Sunday Business Post reported Sunday.
The new 96-page tabloid is aimed at readers between ages 20 and 50, with a large portion of coverage dedicated to sports and lifestyle features. The paper's editor, Gerry Mulligan, is a former features editor at the Irish Independent.
Once the new paper is launched, it is expected to bring River Media's total circulation to 160,000. Other River Media titles include the Sligo Post, Leitrim Post and Monaghan Post. The initial print run for the Wicklow News will be 20,000, but the media group's co-founder and director, Tim Collins, told the Sunday Business Post that he would be satisfied with sales settling between 8,000 to 10,000.
This is the first time the growing media group will come into direct competition with Independent News & Media, which owns Wicklow People, which had an average circulation of 12,830 for the first half of 2007, according to the Post.
