Zimbabwe to allow foreign media owners

The government of Zimbabwe has agreed to open Zimbabwe's media to foreign owners, although foreign journalists will continue to be barred from working in the country permanently.
South African President Thabo Mbeki helped to broker the changes to the Public Order and Security Act, stringent security and media laws that critics say helped entrench Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe's rule.
Mugabe's critics also say he used the act to prevent opposition rallies and demonstrations, and also gave security forces latitude to use excessive force to end protests, according to Reuters.
Nelson Chamisa, spokesman for the opposition party Movement for Democratic Change, told Reuters the reforms must be implemented immediately.
“Everything has to be done with mutual consent. This is a unilateral decision and its not done with full sincerity and undermines the talks somewhat,” he said, according to Reuters.
