The Boston Globe will raise its newsstand price from 50 cents to 75 cents beginning Feb. 4, the newspaper announced Friday.
The price hike applies to newspapers sold in Greater Boston, as the daily Globe already costs 75 cents beyond 30 miles from the city.
Home delivery and Boston Sunday Globe prices remain unchanged, a Boston Globe report stated.
Meanwhile, Editor & Publisher reported Friday that the president of the Boston Newspaper Guild sent a letter to Globe executives, stating that “The Boston Newspaper Guild is disgusted to have read the Metro story about possible layoffs at the Boston Globe with no prior mention of reductions by Globe representatives to The Boston Newspaper Guild.”
The Metro article, published Thursday, was updated Friday, stating that although “Metro Boston Editor Saul Williams stands by the original report, which cited sources inside and outside the Globe,” the Globe “has no plans for a staff reduction of the size reported yesterday in Metro.”
Al Larkin, a Globe spokesman, partially denied Metro's Thursday report, stating that “Metro Boston's front page story (Thursday) claiming that the Boston Globe is planning 'hundreds of layoffs' is factually incorrect. There are no plans for a staff reduction of the size cited in the Metro. As we have said many times in the past, we are always looking for operational efficiencies and will make staff reductions in accordance with those efforts when and if appropriate,” according to the E&P report.
The Boston Globe report did not comment on the layoffs.
