If the broadcasting industry can set up a wireless standard in the next year, they could be making an extra US$2 billion yearly in revenue by 2012 by delivering wireless content, according to trade group NAB.
The study, commissioned by the NAB's technology advocacy programme FASTROAD (Flexible Advanced Services for Television & Radio On All Devices) urged an industry-adopted standard in place by early next year, MediaPost reported Monday.
According to the analysis by BIA Financial Network and the Law and Economics Consulting Group (LECG), the approximate $2 billion would result in $1.1 billion for local stations, and $900 million for networks and syndicators.
Revenues would be generated from advertising attached to the mobile content, subscription fees, and some compensation from wireless providers. Several new standards are currently on the table, which allows the content transfer to mobile phones and in-car screens, according to MediaPost.
The Open Mobile Video Coalition, a broadcaster-supported group launched in April 2007, has been developing a standard since then, MediaPost reported.
