Bharti Airtel, VSNL and seven other global telecoms have agreed to build a submarine fiber optic cable that will stretch from India to France, through the Middle East, The Times of India reported Thursday.
The 14,000 km cable is hoped to be completed by late 2009, and will meet the growing needs of Asia, the Middle East and Europe. Bharti would not disclose the cost of the project.
Other telecoms invested in the project are Etisalat (UAE), France Telecom (France), Ogero (Lebanon), PTCL (Pakistan), STC (Saudi Arabia), TE (Egypt) and TIS Sparkle (Italy).
The 3.84 terabits/second high-capacity fiber optic submarine cable has been dubbed I-ME-WE (India, Middle East, Western Europe), and is the fifth of similar cable systems, according to The Times of India.
“The cable system is designed for the next 25 years, so it can accommodate a huge amount of traffic. We are building a landing station for the cable in Mumbai,” David Nishball, president of enterprise services for Bharti Airtel, told The Times of India.
A formal agreement detailing construction and maintenance was signed Wednesday in Rome.
