The Kunming Daily, in China's southwestern province of Yunnan, published local government officials' contact information, with government permission.
The information appeared Saturday in a four-page special section, and included telephone numbers, positions and responsibilities of local government officials, as well as leading officials of the municipal Communist Party committee, Xinhua reported Monday.
The special section of the Kunming Daily was sold out within hours of hitting newsstands, causing the newspaper to reprint the edition, according to Xinhua, China's official news agency.
City officials in Kunming, the province's capital, are split on how they feel about having their basic work contact information printed in the newspaper.
“The publication of the government contacts not only benefits the public, which has access in speaking out about their problems, but also helps superiors supervise their subordinates,”said Wu Tinggen, a Kunming Municipal Committee member, according to Xinhua. “This may cause unease, but some officials work and live so comfortably that they make people feel uncomfortable. The point is on which side you stand.”
