An unofficial list on Los Angeles Times newsroom staffers who have applied for a buyout has been published by LA Observed.
It is unknown who, if any, on the list were asked to take a buyout, and some applications may be declined, although David Hiller, the paper's publisher, has said in the past that anyone who wants to leave will be able to take the buyout.
However, most editorial staffers were “deemed ineligible,” Jim Newton, LA Times editor, told LA Observed. Newton also said he asked Hiller if he was eligible.
The list is available on the LA Observed Web site, which notes that adjustments will be made to the list as names are taken off and more names are learned.
The buyout programme grants one week's worth of pay for every six months of employment, up to 52 weeks. The reductions will bring employment numbers down to below 850, from about 875 currently. Ten years ago, the newsroom was at its peak, with more than 1,200 staffers, according to the LA Times.
