NRC Handelsblad on Thursday became the first Dutch newspaper to publish a daily electronic version, making all sections and supplements available on ePaper in the Netherlands and abroad, at any time to subscribers with an iLiad eReader, according to a press release.
In 1995, newspaper was also the first national Dutch newspaper to launch its own Web site, stated Birgit Donker, editor of NRC Handelsblad.
Making content available on an additional platform, ePaper, will continue to boost the paper's image as “innovative and progressive,” Donker stated in the PR Newswire press release, posted by Earth Times.
“More and more eReaders are coming on the market. Although their main use at the moment is for reading books, they also provide a good, flexible and above all a mobile solution for reading newspapers,” Gert Jan Oelderik, NRC Handelsblad director and publisher, stated in the press release. “The introduction of our ePaper subscription means we can gain experience in the digital release of our content; currently via the iLiad and before too long with a wide range of eReader-type tools.”
Readers have also been invited by the newspaper to use a readers' forum to give comments and feedback for alterations they would like the paper to make for ePaper.
NRC Handelsblad chose the eReader iLiad, designed by Dutch company iRex Technologies, and is offering the ePaper in combination with the iLiad for €699. Current subscribers will receive the ePaper for free, and can order the iLiad for a special price, €499.
