People who grow up reading a newspaper are better, more engaged citizens, the Newspaper Association of America has reported.
Research on young readers show that 62 percent of Americans who read newspapers as teens took part in volunteer work, while only 37 percent of those who did not read newspapers volunteered.
Meanwhile, 74 percent of American teens who read a newspaper donated money to civic causes in 2007, and were also 20 percent more likely to voice their political opinions. Of those who did not read newspapers, 51 percent contributed to civic causes.
The research points to a factor newspapers have been touting for hundreds of years: reading newspapers is good for civic health, the Kalamazoo Gazette reported.
The Gazette is a Newspaper in Education sponsor, and involves more than 250 classrooms in its programme.
