Free daily GASTE launched in Istanbul Feb. 11, leading the market with a print run of 500,000 overnight. The local daily, in turn, has launched its own free daily, 20 Dakik (20 Minutes), Newspaper Innovation reported Thursday.
20 Dakik's print run is not yet known.
GASTE was launched in part by Pelle Anderson, one of Metro's 1995 Stockholm founders. It is a tabloid and has 28 to 32 full-colour pages, already claiming more than 50 percent of Istanbul's readership, according to Newspaper Innovation.
The 500,000 print run puts GASTE in fourth place in Turkey, after Poste, Zaman and Hürriyet. Turkey's total circulation is 5 million. In Turkey, 80 percent of newspaper sales is in single copies, according to Newspaper Innovation.
Previously, Turkey had no free dailies, and is now the 55th country worldwide with a free newspaper, and the 32nd European country with a free daily, Newspaper Innovation reported.
