Dayton Daily News editorial workers on Tuesday received a boost of support from a U.S. senator in their quest to receive a new contract, as employees have been working under a contract ratified in 1986, the Associated Press reported.
“I stand with you as you fight for this,” U.S. Senator Sherrod Brown, D-Ohio, told the 75 people gathered outside newspaper offices, including editorial workers, city officials and labour leaders.
The Dayton Newspaper Guild represents 147 workers, and told the AP that minimum base pay has not been raised for 14 years. The Guild also stated that the company that owns the paper, Cox Ohio Publishing, is looking to freeze wages and deny affordable health care, adding that minimum pay for a first-level reporter is US$25,650, according to the AP, in an article posted by Forbes.
Emily Chambers, vice president of human resources at Cox Ohio Publishing, said in a statement that employees are eligible for yearly pay increases and bonuses, and that the company's total compensation package is one of the best in the region, the AP reported.
Cox Ohio publishes the Daily News, which has a daily circulation of 121, 240 and a Sunday circulation of 166,094.
