One of the catalysts for the growth is the proliferation of 3.5G devices. The regions with highest adoption will be Austria, Italy, the United Kingdom and the Nordics countries eMarketer reported.

Pete Nuthall, analyst at Forrester Research, pointed out that mobile Internet is eventually reaching a tipping point. However, “deploying high-speed mobile networks and rolling out advanced handsets are not enough to spark demand," he said, according to eMarketer. "Our data shows that less than half of 3G phone owners use the 3G capability on their phone.”

Nuthall said in order to drive the mobile Internet, operators will need to push hard. “They need to push flat-rate data plans, increase the number of relevant services and applications, and introduce new devices that provide a better user experience.”
